April 2007 Scrapie Canada Update

Please see information below concerning both obex testing and genotype testing under the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program.

Laboratory Information for Genotyping Under the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program (SFCP)

The following laboratories may be used when completing genotyping under the SFCP. There are two groups of laboratories that complete genotype testing- one group has been CFIA approved and the other group has not been CFIA approved.Below is a list of both approved laboratories and non-approved laboratories.

Under Pathway 2 and Pathway 3 of the SFCP, producers are asked to take two samples from participating rams (See Sections 5, 6 and 7 of the SFCP Handbook). As part of program regulations, one sample must be tested at an approved laboratory, while the second sample can be tested at a laboratory that is not approved.

It is of the utmost importance to send your samples to the appropriate labs to meet the requirements for Pathway 2 and 3. If you have any questions regarding which labs you are required to send your samples to, please contact the Scrapie Project Coordinator.

Laboratory Information for Obex (Brain) Testing under the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program

As part of the SFCP, producers are required to complete a brain test on any animal that dies on the farm that is over one year of age. If no animals die within the year, producers are required to cull an animal that is over 24 months of age and complete a brain test.

The cost of the brain test is covered by the program. In order for the cost of the brain test to be invoiced to Scrapie Canada, producers must submit a cover letter with the following information to the laboratory along with the brain sample.

  1. Contact information
  2. Animal identification information
  3. SFCP enrollment number

If submitting the entire head to the laboratory, please note that most laboratories charge an extra fee to remove the obex from the head (approximately $15.00 depending on the laboratory). This removal fee is not covered by the program and producers are responsible for paying this cost. If submitting the entire head, producers should contact the laboratory in advance and inquire about the cost of the obex removal.
